underCover - fashion photography

  • Simran Kaur

" underCover " is an editorial fashion photoshoot showcasing the story of an individual trying to hide themselves to become someone they are not. Simran was inspired by social media platforms, in which most of the time people seem to be their real selves when they might not be what they are showing us. Everyone is constantly hiding their bad days, traits, stories and such just to be the society's standard individual present on social media but not fully in life. The editorial photoshoot was then made into two pieces of fashion videography. One of them was made with polaroid captured during the photoshoot which Simran then scanned and distorted to represent how social media distorts the perception of the person we thought to always know. This was also portrayed by the static present in the short video Simran created and the distorted audio which makes the audience feel lost while trying to understand what is happening to the subject in the video. The video was also a way for Simran to showcase her personal experience with social media when she was 13 years old. As she entered Instagram she started using filters to change the way she looked to become what society wanted and expected of each of the subjects living in their constructed society. This, unfortunately, made Simran question herself what and who she was because clearly, the person on that social media account was not her, it was what society expected.
