Focused on small- town life in America and the “hillbilly” lifestyle. Through imagery taken from the neon sign warehouse, “God’s Own Junkyard”, i have been able to collect inspiring photographs and fabric samples that i believe embody the spirit of a small-town community. I intend to research the concept of “trailer trash” and the small town mentality of a society far-removed from big city life: A somewhat hidden community that never the less continues to have an effect on mainstream culture. Using a number of different sources I have attempted to capture the rural and bleak nature of this community, through the use of stark and muted colours with hints of brights and pastel to reflect their warm nature. I have been inspired by the poem “A desolation” by Allen Ginsberg, and this is used to create illustrations based on the collection.
