UNITED UTILITIES - A Life on the River

  • Charlie Battersby
To celebrate the opening of United Utilities' £200 million extension to Liverpool Wastewater Treatment Works by H.R.H. The Princess Royal in April 2016, a commemorative book was produced in a limited run of 100 copies.
The book is a visual record of the River Mersey and the city of Liverpool as it grew and prospered from its geographical significance.
Specialist Printers, Pressision, provided invaluable creative support and advice, sourcing paper stock and printing. The book was then hand finished by specialist bookbinders Spink and Thackray.
A rich variety of historical photographs were sourced. The images document the thriving and bustling life of the dockers and sailors who helped shape Liverpool.
H.R.H. The Princess Royal was presented with her own personal copy of the book during the opening ceremony.
Bellowing steam ferries, white trans-atlantic liners, cranes, stevedores, shipyards, trains, smoke, chaos, hooting, hammering, puffing, the ruptured bellies of the ships from all the continents of the world... And if I heaped up words for another half an hour, I wouldn't achieve the full number, confusion and expanse which is called Liverpool. Karel Capek, Letters from England, 1924
