Unpublished Projects: Creating a Professional Directory

When I met photographer Agnes Essonti in 2015, loads of ideas were born. We planned a trip to Senegal with the mission of creating professional directories for business owners located in the less popular regions. The ultimate goal was to help them market their businesses through personal branding that would make them shine in the directory. Agnes never made it to the flight and I found myself on my way to Dakar with a second hand Canon 400D bought in Barcelona just 1 hour before grabbing my flight. The first locality I visited was Cap Skirring, a tiny town that was first occupied by fishermen and later discovered by the French in the 1960s. A landing strip for small planes was built at the end of 1960 by members of the Aero Club de Ziguinchor. The directory is highly visual and humanises each business through portraits of the management and staff. I wanted to showcase each commercial space as it is, so the photo shoots where never scheduled. I visited hundreds of business and collected data. I lived in the village during the whole production period. The Professional Directory was never published for budget matters. After a couple of months traveling across the country, I found myself with 970 images in a folder named "Senegal" and never really found a destination for them.
