Used to Design

Taking inspiration from Japanese Boro textiles, Used to Design aimed to explore the relationship we have with the clothing we wear regularly and celebrate the beauty of its eventual worn and distressed surface. As a textiles designer entering the industry in the current climate, I recognise the need for more sustainable practices. With this in mind, I explored natural alternatives to dye within Used to Design, using food waste and by-product to colour hemp yarn and British wool. The use of patchwork and visible construction was influenced by how traditional Boro textiles would be patched together from smaller off-cuts of fabric and allowed me to fully leverage my resources when constructing my garments.
