Virgin Media communication box artwork

A project set by the Ash Road Area Residents Association in Leeds, to design and hand paint a Virgin Media communication box to brighten up the area.
I was lucky enough to be selected as one of 20 Leeds artists to design and paint a Virgin media communication box in Headingley, Leeds, after submitting an initial design as part of a competition set by the Ash Road Area Residents Association.
The design I created was based on different worlds, underground, on ground, sky and space, and the different characters and elements that you'd expect to see within each world, which was inspired by the novel The Time Machine by H G Wells.
When creating this design I wanted to create something which was fun and engaging, making the most of bright colours, whilst also trying to teach children about the structure of the world in a fun and imaginative way.
Initially the design was created digitally on Adobe Illustrator, however once it was selected to be painted onto the box, I had to simplify and condense it to make it more manageable. The design was then hand painted onto the box itself with the aid of stencils, to ensure a consistent appearance throughout.
This project has been featured in Independent Leeds magazine Issue 07, Leeds College of Art website, and The Yorkshire Evening Post website and newspaper. The finished boxes were also featured collectively in an exhibition at Heart Enterprise and Arts Centre in Headingley, with postcards of the boxes on sale and TV coverage by Made In Leeds on The Lowdown Leeds Part 2 aired on 28th February 2017
