Void - Non - Void
I was part of a three person team which saw this installation come from concept to being built. The title of the work is taken from one of the oldest hip-hop tracks of all time, ‘The Message’ by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. “Now you’re unemployed, all non-void, walkin’ round like your Pretty Boy Floyed’. During popular house parties in The Bronx, breaks from the DJ were amplified by someone who switched the light switch on and off to the beat.
Voic-Non-Void is a light artwork that makes the darkness tangible. In an instant, the object changes from a white cube to a black box, from an empty tube to a filled core and from a blind spot to a penetrating after-image. After the bright light, your eyes glow in the dark for a moment.
Due to the concept behind the design it felt only right to use the space in a hip hop music video and really bring it to life. We managed to collaborate with the Dutch rap group ‘Yung Internet’ to film the video for their new song ‘BINNEN’ around the space. The video is still in production but here are some stills from it.
