Whitechapel Gallery: Filming Abstraction

  • Phoebe Shannon-Fagan
Kazimir Malevich’s Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and Society 1915-2015, takes Malevich’s painting of a black square as ‘an emblem of a new art and new society’ and will be continuing until 6th April.
As a complementary accompaniment, Whitechapel Gallery shall be holding a special day of film screenings, Filming Abstraction, on Saturday 21st, responding to the themes of the exhibition: Architectonics, Communication, The Everyday and Utopia.
The event will show large selection of films adhering to these themes, including a premiere from Liberate Tate, continuing with early work from Harry Smith and also including a panel discussion from George Barber, Laura Buckley, Jesc Bunyard, Hannah Davey & Mika Kemper, Ian Hilliwell and John Smith at 4pm. The day ends with work from Stan Brakhage, one of the most important figures in experimental film. The day should be a chance to fully immerse yourself into more abstract and artistic film pieces, showcasing the symbol of ‘modernism’s utopian aspirations and breakdowns’.
