Winners of V&A Illustration Awards 2019 Announced

    Discover the best of contemporary book, editorial and student illustration.

    Congratulations to the winners of the V&A Illustration Awards 2019!
    This year's judging panel reviewed almost a thousand entries, shortlisted fourteen artists and carefully selected their winners after much consideration:
    • Book Illustration and Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year 2019: Nora Krug for Heimat, published by Particular Books
    • Book Cover Design: Yehrin Tong for Their Eyes Were Watching God,published by Virago
    • Editorial Illustration: A. Richard Allen, Illustration for ‘My Lawyer was so bad I did the work myself’, published by The Sunday Telegraph
    • Student Illustrator of the Year 2019: Sophie Burrows, Crushing, Anglia Ruskin University
    • Student Runner-Up: Yanyin Xu, One by One, University of the Arts London, Camberwell College of Arts
    Each winner received £3000 and the overall winner of the competition was awarded an additional £5000 and the Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year Prize. The student runner-up received £2,000.
    The winning art works and student shortlist are on display at the V&A until Sunday 25 August 2019 - find out more and plan a visit.
    The judges of the published category were artist Jessica Voorsanger, Nicholas Coleridge CBE, Chairman of the V&A Trustees, and Olivia Ahmad, Curator at the House of Illustration. The student category judging panel comprised illustrator Cat O'Neil and Suzanne Dean, Creative Director for Vintage, Penguin Random House.

    The V&A Illustration Awards champion the best of student, book and journalistic illustration in the UK. Entry for the 2020 awards will open later this year, exact date TBC.
