Women across the Water

  • Jane Catterson

A data visualisation looking at abortion statistics within Northern Ireland and the comparison between them and the number of women travelling to the UK to receive the same medical treatment. The subject is positioned to give an idea of the identity of herself, that there is no one definition of the female form, but also remaining anonymous, as many woman who access this treatment often are. 12 images represent the 12 women who accessed abortions within NI in 2018. Images are hand stitched together with 1053 stitches, representing the number of women in 2018 that travelled from NI to GB to access safe and legal abortions. The stitching is also to give idea of community and the labour intensive process it is to make this journey.

The information about the data is accessed through an app called Artivive. It allows hidden text and images to be revealed ontop of other images. I have chosen this way because people often turn a blind eye to NI and our problems yet the information is so easy to find online and around us. Every one has access to a phone and they just need to go looking for the information to find it.
