Projects
- Lulu Ratna for Jurnal RuangThe project is done in collaboration with Gramedia's new digital editorial, Ruang, and can be seen here. Lulu walked hurriedly towards us, her orange bandana in place, her bubbly personality spilled out from within even from her first few words - Lulu would be a pleasant lady to chat with, I thought. Over the next couple of hours we would hear about her start in the Indonesian short film industry, how she found her way into film festivals left and right, establishing herself as a passionate sc
- Arahmaiani for Jurnal RuangThe project is done for Jurnal Ruang. Original article in Indonesian can be found here. A lady stepped out of the house we arrived to wearing color coordinated orange graphic tees and orange pants; she opened the gates to her sister's house and let us in before sitting at the sofa. "well, make yourselves at home and tell me where you want my photos to be taken," the lady said; she is Arahmaiani, a prolific and storied artist spending much of her time evading authorities between countries. Within the last couple of years, the question of identity continued to surface over the indonesian ideological landscape, and for Jurnal Ruang, Arahmaiani with her situationally noamdic lifestyle was a perfect person to chat with. Over the next several hours we would talk about her first couple of run ins with Indonesian authority, her escape outside of Indonesia, and her works around the world.
- Ibnu Wahyudi for Jurnal RuangThis project is done in collaboration with Jurnal Ruang. Original article in Indonesian can be read here. Following an hour of commute by train and gojek (Indonesia's privately owned bike taxi) from Jakarta, I arrived in a smaller suburb close to Bogor. Standing on the mouth of an alleway was Ibnu Wahyudi, welcoming me to his house. "Was it difficult to find? The house?" To which I answered, "somewhat." Over the next couple of hours, Ibnu Wahyudi and I would chat about his personal collection of books, a personal passion that has its roots from Ibnu's affection to stories and meanings contained within items. His personal collection ranges from books to calling cards (mostly Korean), to CDs, and to -unsurprisingly - stamps. A poet himself, Ibnu Wahyudi's collection also includes his body of work, in the middle of which he placed an old photo of his mother, itself with its own story.
- Aditia Gunawan for Ruang GramediaThe project is an assignment by Gramedia's new digital publication Ruang. Original article can be seen here. In a country seemingly so attached to our culture, Indonesia tend to overlook historical and archival efforts. With relatively scarce funding for research in history and documents, Aditia Gunawan's job as the national philologist for ancient sundanese manuscript tend to raise half an eyebrow. Proficient in ancient sundanese, ancient javanese, alongside english and french, Gunawan spends much of his time trying to learn more about the ancient sundanese society through their archaic writings. Gunawan spent several hours with us, discussing about his experience, challenges, and wonders of being a philologist, especially in countries where such efforts tend to be overlooked such as Indonesia.
