About me
AJ is an illustrator based in Cornwall, England. Her use of characters comes from being a constant doodler and avid day dreamer. Growing up, obsessively watching 1960 & 70’s cartoons created by Hannah Barbera and others such as Looney Tunes, has evidently influenced her drawing style. Since completing a Masters in Authorial Illustration at Falmouth University, AJ has ventured into the world of comics and story telling. She explores telling tales of human folly through her use of characters. “Witty thinking” is at the fore front of my practice. I like to create twists and turns, to ask the question “What if”? and to create otherworldly situations. This can be a satirical tone of voice, but it is not an aggressive one. The bold bright colours I am so attracted to use create a surreal and playful aesthetic”.
Projects
  • Sketching My Surroundings
Sketching My SurroundingsA little personal piece, that came about from collating my favourite sketches based on nature and animals and compiling them into a mural sized composition. When I don't know what to draw, I start off my drawing plants and flowers and simplify with graphic shapes along the way till I am left with some funky stylised flora.
  • ONCE UPON A TOWN
ONCE UPON A TOWNI was approached by the wonderful duo, Cai and Kyn to illustrate the cover of their winter issue, for Once Upon a Town magazine. The theme was to be pantomimes and Christmas. I really enjoyed creating these classic panto characters and peppering the scene with some festive cheer.
  • MAGIC BOWLS

  • MAGIC BEANS

  • FERMENT MAGAZINE (mock)
FERMENT MAGAZINE (mock)An Illustration mock up for Ferment's Issue 61.
  • AQUILA MAGAZINE
AQUILA MAGAZINEI was asked by the guys at Aquila to illustrate a double spread on their “ICE AGE” theme for January issue 2021. The article featured weird historical facts and myths on ice cream. I wanted my response to be playful, a bit silly and to play with the context of the article. Scroll down to see some character close ups...
