My title was senior designer and I was working on the trade list of books. Mainly I was working on the new non-fiction range of books that are to come, such as The Big Book Of Dead Things and The Great British Book. These are both heavy designed and illustrated 60 and 84 page titles. I also worked on activity books and helping with new ideas for projects in the future. All projects would involve me finding illustrators, negotiating fee's. Then fully briefing and full art direction for the duration of the project. As well as me completing the full design and type setting for the book.
At Ladybird I also worked closely with the production department on spec's for new titles and costs. Also liaise closely with other departments such as sales and marketing and the rights department. Working in the trade team I also used my experience, to help with the design assistant and designer in any day to day
issues or art direction help they needed.

My role at Caterpillar was as a senior designer working on novelty & picture books.
I started as designer then in January 2013 was promoted to senior designer.
The Caterpillar list is mainly made up of novelty title’s like the Planet pop-up series a 6 spread pop up book with 4 titles in the series, working on this series gave me the opportunity to work with a paper engineer and an illustrator to create some great pops then working closely with production to refine and even amend to get the costs to work. Also I have worked on a Monster series that was made up of a stickier, doodle and maker books where the monsters are pressed out from the book then slotted together. A slightly older in age range titles I worked on were Dinosaurs Alive, Oceans Alive & Bugs Alive these are fully Illustrated titles with full size flaps on every spread with lots of facts for the reader.
The list is also made up of Little Tiger Kids books these are photographic books aimed at the younger end of the market, here I have worked on titles that use touch and feel and sound chips to really engage when read with a child.
I have also had the opportunity to work on a picture book with Ian Cunliffe titled I Want to be a Witch a fully illustrated 32 page book, using my experience from Scholastic aloud me to work out the schedules and manage the project. I have also worked with Garry Parsons about fantastic skeletons! And the fantastic die cut series of picture books by Britta Teckentrup called Tree, Bee & Under the same sky.
Also lots of other projects with die cuts, moulded pieces & board pieces like Colours Colours everywhere.
In the recent year Caterpillar has launched a non-fiction range called 360 degrees, this is aimed at the high end of the market using lovely paper and high production standards paired with beautiful art and fantastic writers.
During my time at Caterpillar Books my Novelty experience has grown and also my time management not just of my own and hitting deadlines for the book fairs but I have been given the responsibly of looking after the Junior designers schedule of work and all there development in design and the job.
