About me
I am an architectural designer with experience in construction. I'm looking to get involved in artistic projects and can help to design and/or build, sets, stages, storage, shelters, sheds or any other architectural creation. Need something built, get in touch. alex@exarchitectures.com @ex_architectures
Projects
  • Bird Box #1
Bird Box #1I was meant to start an international exchange when the corona virus pandemic hit the UK; and like so many others, I had to adapt and respond to the realities of lock down. My garden shed became my new destination, where I set about sourcing material from the collection of ‘waste’ from previous projects. I settled upon left over solid oak floor boards, which had been used to surface the hallway. Developing a brief I was inspired by the bird song which had overtaken the urban humdrum during the l
  • Storage to Mantel
Storage to MantelThis birch ply wood storage and mantelpiece combination was custom built to fit. Originally the client was planning on buying a piece of Next shelving to fill the gap to the right of this chimney breast. However, once we started discussions, we wanted to explore ways that a mantel could be adjoined. The result is an impressive piece which breaks from standard mantel symmetry, creating a deep shelf that extends continuously, with carefully crafted butt joints and without visible fixings.
  • Entrance Hallway
Entrance HallwayAn architecture that greets you when you arrive home. An architecture that sits in a place and doesn't disturb your movement. An architecture that fits around you and those annoying details that stop you from using something standard.
  • Performative Shed
Performative ShedHaving worked on developing a series of experimental building techniques, I wanted to use these a real project. I knew that my granmother needed a new shed, so I thought this could be a great opportunity to build. The result of which can be seen below.
  • Performative Building
Performative BuildingThrough this project I was looking to develop a performative approach to construction. That meant improvisational design techniques, allowing the body to directly influence the creation and considering an active audience. As such a corner fragment was resolved; developed through a series of impromptu experimental construction sessions.
  • Coralarium
CoralariumThis is a project lead by artist Jason de Caires Taylor. I contributed as an architectural consult, developing the architectural aspects using CAD, physical models and sketches, faciltating the vision of the artist.
