- The Sorrows of Young WertherAim The aim of the project is to create a typographic interpretation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther, written in 1774, in order to highlight one person’s emotional journey that led to his eventual suicide. This book was said to be responsible for a number of copycat suicides so the intention in this digital interpretation is to chart the emotional extremes of the protagonist, giving the reader direct access to particular passages relevant to his changing moods
- The Future of the BookThis project is based on my thesis and challenges the form of the book, by having it in a circle. It contains three layers of information, that you have to physically interact with, over time, in order to read. The circular form relates to objects and ideas of measuring time, and the quotes represent ideas of the past, present and future of the book. Ancient civilisations used circular sundials to tell time. As the sun moves across the sky, the shadow aligns with different hour-lines which are marked on the dial to indicate the time of day. In addition to their time-telling function, sundials are valued as decorative objects. Books represent the moment in which they are made, they become a container of information fixed in time. Traditionally, books are read from beginning to end. In comparison to this, the circle doesn't contain a distinct beginning, middle or end, which means it can be read from any point.
