Leeds For Life Foundation GrantUniversity of LeedsI was selected and awarded a grant to develop and carry out a project that would enable personal growth and further my studies as well as help a wider community. I wanted to understand more about Cuba's socioeconomic history from a Cuban perspective as my project, and also to create correspondence between Leeds University students and Havana University students. I went to Cuba on the 06/2015 for 7 weeks. For 2 weeks I participated in a solidarity brigade, living alongside 130 Europeans aged 16-70 from 19 different countries and visiting several provinces in Cuba including Havana, Matanzas and Santa Clara. I attended conferences addressing the political, historical and economical realties in Cuba and the implications of changing relations with the US. I also worked on local farm collectives, visited a local health clinic, youth projects in creative arts, met with local governors and presidents of The Committee for the Defence of the Revolution, the Federation of Cuban Women and also with representatives of local trade unions. I stayed in Havana for the remainder of my time living in home stays with little interaction with other tourists and speaking almost entirely in Spanish. I had Conga Lessons every other day for 3 of those weeks. My experience from that point onwards became about forming a more rounded understanding of Cuba through the arts which differed greatly to the government controlled brigade. It was a privilege to visit Cuba at a time where it is rapidly changing and once I'd returned the final part of my project was to share my understandings of Cuba through the means of a presentation to give fellow International Development students.
