  • Simply Smocked
Simply SmockedThe geometry and repetition within flowers acts as a starting point for this project. Combining vibrant colours and patterns with a uniformed and rigid structure has allowed for the creation of versitile fabrics aimed at both the fashion and accessories market. Smocking is an embroidery technique used to gather fabric so that it can stretch. Before elastic, smocking was commonly used in cuffs, bodices, and necklines in garments where buttons were undesirable. Combining specifically designed digitally printed fabric with a handmade process allowed for the creation of very vivid tactile samples that include a considered distribution of colour and pattern.

  • New York, New York
New York, New YorkFocusing primarily on constructed surfaces and manipulated materials, this project takes inspiration from New York’s architecture specifically located in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. This collection explores surface pattern and texture through experimentation with processes including Smocking, Digital Embroidery and Laser Cutting. Having visited the ‘Manus and Machina’ exhibition in New York City, this project draws inspiration from the initial concept of the exhibition, reconciling the handmade and the machine-made. The exhibition challenged the traditional view of the ongoing separation, in which hand and machine are presented as discordant tools in the creative process. I have used this theory to create a range of samples aimed specifically at Haute Couture womenswear fashion.
