About me
I am currently employed by The Sun Newspaper as a Graphics Editor, a position held for the last three years. I have also worked as a freelance illustrator for ten years. My passion and desire for design is forever growing having worked with a number of high profile clients such as the BBC, the Orient Express and Transworld Publishers. I understand, having worked on the other side of the commissioning process, the deadlines an illustrator works to, how to price projects, spot illustrations and what type of agency to approach for particular styles.
I am an enthusiastic designer looking to develop my skills and knowledge within the design sector. I thrive working under pressure in an environment that deals with extremely tight daily deadlines. The work that I carry out is produced quickly and accurately to maintain the level of presentation that my seniors expect. I can multi task between situations and still maintain a very high standard in all areas.
I am jointly responsible for producing five weekly supplements, dealing with the main newspaper and producing graphics and animation for both TV and The Sun’s app. I take responsibility for all my graphics by ensuring that no typography or graphical errors occur, providing direction to projects and liaising daily with the Art Director, Editor and TV producers to ensure the overall identity across all platforms is maintained.
I help lead a team of ten designers where I delegate work where needed, as well as mentoring staff members over creative decisions. I also hold joint responsibility for their shift management and employing freelancers when required. I create templates for layout and artwork that can easily be amended to save time when others need to make changes. These elements are archived and used across daily and weekly supplements.
I have a good eye for detail and am meticulous with the work that our team produces. I have gained a wealth of knowledge in how to colour correct and retouch photos and am more than confident to produce a flawless finish. I check the artwork that goes to print and ensure designs are accurate whilst maintaining the style and level expected of The Sun. I understand how the print process works and know how artwork needs to be saved for its variant uses, for example reformatting logos used in print to be applied to large-scale billboards.
I am an experienced user with the CC suite in Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and have good working knowledge of After Effects. All my designs are produced using these programs. I am punctual, always meeting set deadlines and creating good rapport with all of my clients and colleagues.
As an illustrator, I have had to research photos to assist me with my work whether it is from sites like Getty Images or using Google. I have also gained an understanding about this process taking an interest in our picture desk at News UK and knowing the various companies and methods used to retrieve photos.
