Exploring how waste materials can be used to create new materials for seating and interiors. I was donated offcut wires and foam from two different factories in Scotland. So I started my project by working out how I could use these unconventional materials in my knit context. After a lot of experimentation I worked out a way of working with the materials in strip form and using hand techniques such as crochet and macramé. My visual and technical inspiration came from my trip to Colombia in the summer. There was a mass of colour, pattern, line and shape, which I felt really inspired by. I met some Colombians making traditional ‘Mochillas’ (bags) and friendship bracelets using crochet and macramé techniques. I have constantly looked back to how I can make my fabrics more sustainable as I feel this is an important and inevitable way of working for the future. The yarns I have used alongside the foam and wire are recycled jersey and cotton yarns and organic cotton.
