Temporary employment whilst searching for a journalism job. Skills maintained: communication and interpersonal skills, strong work ethic, diligence during long and busy shifts.
Spent one month as an editorial intern at Notion Magazine and continued as a regular contributing writer for their online platform. Gained wider understanding of the running of a successful, independent magazine and the importance of using social media to attract and maintain audiences. Tasks included: market research, proof reading, writing, uploading and editing online content via WordPress, writing long and short-form features for print (Issue 70), transcribing interviews and creating posts for social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook).
Worked on both the News and Features desks. Further developed my writing ability to match that of a fast paced, national newspaper by researching, sourcing and writing articles between 50-500 words. Shadowed a senior reporter on a breaking news story where I used my journalistic initiative to independently interview members of the public. First-hand experience of strict deadlines, writing accurately under time pressure, and efficient decision making.
Scarlettlondon.com received 75,000 unique hits per month whilst I was a writer. This experience expanded my knowledge of writing for a blog-based, online platform and enhanced my ability to readily adapt my writing style. Skills gained: representing the brand at events, in-depth research, face-to-face interviews, use of visual media online, DSLR photography.
Appointed Deputy Lifestyle Editor after being a committed writer. Wrote articles for all three sections: features, lifestyle and news and gained a wealth of experience in creating content for an online audience. Role included: recruiting and motivating writers, liaising efficiently with editorial team, sub-editing content, uploading content onto WordPress run site ensuring strong SEO and interactivity.
Whilst studying Multimedia Journalism I put my skills to practice writing, presenting and reading for the various platforms. Voluntary participation meant organisation and self-motivation were key. Awarded Radio News Reader of the month in March 2015 and Online Writer of the Month in September 2015.
