About me
I'm Calum, I was born and raised on Merseyside attending St Anselm's College between 2006-2013, where I achieved 11 A-A* GCSEs and 4 As at A-Level. I then went to Durham University where I studied Theology, achieving a 2:1 grade. I love literature and reading and I write short stories, a hobby which has evolved into me recently embarking upon writing a novel. I have worked in a number of sectors, such as hospitality and PR, and I believe that the diverse range of skills and experiences I have accrued from working has prepared me well for a more permanent position.
Projects
  • Tonic Grapevine Newsletters
Tonic Grapevine NewslettersWhilst working at Tonic PR and Communications I created the Tonic Grapevine Newsletter. I designed and formatted the newsletter, collated and created content for it and tailored the mailing list to suitable recipients fortnightly. The newsletter began in October and I ran this project until leaving Tonic in November 2016 after which, due to its success, it was continued by other members of staff.

Head of Markets and EventsEat Chay
    London, United KingdomFull Time
I began with Eat Chay as a market assistant, working my way into a position of management where I now train, supervise and schedule other members of staff on my team. I have had to conduct interviews and hire and fire staff. I am also responsible for searching out new opportunities for the business be it a new market, festival or event and then subsequently liaising with the relevant organiser. I have had to create and update performance reports to track financial progress and stock, organise transport to and from events both inside and outside of London, ensure staff are properly trained, and aided with Eat Chay’s social media presence. I have developed new ideas with the Directors of Eat Chay in terms of branding, menu and recruitment, not to mention in terms of operations and events.

    Writer's AssistantFreelance
     - London, United KingdomFull Time
I worked with a writer, artist and psychologist on her creative autobiography detailing her life in China under the tumultuous politics of Mao and Deng Xiaoping during the 1960s-90s. I worked closely with the author as she dictated fragments of stories to me, which I then edited and rewrote into a more fluent and developed account. I was also required to contribute original creative content for some of the fictional accounts contained within the text. I researched and learned in depth the economics and politics of the time as well as the nuances of cultures, foods, traditions and geographies. I had to meet very tight deadlines from the author as well as from agencies and publishing houses. I was also involved in the drafting of proposals to publishing houses in attempts to have the work picked up. I spoke online and on the phone with people at publishing houses and we successfully received offers from a number, although the author elected not to take up these opportunities. Much of my work – be it creative content or research – was required to be conducted either off-site or in my own time, nurturing within me a strong work ethic and determination, as well as an ability to self-motivate and ensure the required work was completed. Verifying historical events that appear in the book also required in-depth investigation and helped my own researching qualities develop.

    TheologyUniversity of Durham
     - Durham, United Kingdom
I studied at Van Mildert College, University of Durham and achieved a 2:1 in Theology. My studies allowed me to develop an excellent command of written English, as well as an ability to meet deadlines with written work, self-motivate and organise my workload. The majority of my final year of university consisted of written work as opposed to exams and, resultantly, I feel that managing a number of different pieces of work and hitting deadlines is something I am very capable of doing. I believe that these skills put me in good stead for work experience.
