I work as the Creative Design Engineer for Gravity Industries. The nature of Gravity being a start-up means that my job crosses multiple fields. I coordinate between multiple manufacturers to ensure that our product is up to quality and maintaining lead times. I am designing the UX for our up and coming app, working to achieve a user-friendly, easily adaptable app that can be changed to meet our growing customer base. I am working across multiple work-streams to innovate our product and bring in the correct people for the job which means researching and contacting lead users in the required fields.

This was year long project to create an breakthrough design to support surgeons in Hip Replacement Surgery. We took the brief from DePuy and spent 3 months researching to find lead users to understand the design problems. This included visiting the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (Stanmore) to view surgery. This gave us sufficient insight to begin designing and iterating. Research and testing continued during the design period to ensure that we were heading in the correct direction. We presented back to DePuy at critical points during the year so they could give us necessary guidance and feedback. The final outcome was a 3 part product which currently has 3 pending patents.

Traditionally Design and Engineering programmes have been either Arts or Engineering based. In the future there will be a growing need for designers who are educated as both engineering professionals (who can understand and can apply the latest technological developments), and designers (who understand creative processes, and are able to research and address questions of the contextual relevance and the appropriateness of design). The programme provided a strong interaction between creativity and human factor design together with practical technology through engineering, materials and process principles, and multimedia technology.
