Caroline is a designer and researcher working in a space situated between textile design, craft practices and material futures. She has recently completed her Masters in Creative Technology at Auckland University of Technology.
With a focus on generating knowledge through materials and experimental making her work explores blurring boundaries between craft and digital modes of making.
Caroline's practice sees textiles constructed as material entities, and design outputs are developed through experimentation mapped along two intersecting axes. The vertical axis involves forms of digital and physical materiality as fundamental textile components; the horizontal axis plots the making and the emergence of new textiles. This infrastructure of two axes creates a framework for her design practice, while a philosophical and material questioning drives research areas.
Her practice-led research proposes new processes of designing, opening up a design space for creating interactive textile surfaces. Embracing a mode of making via craft practice integrated with digital technologies allows for new forms of materiality and new processes emerge.
Caroline’s work aims to readdress structure, materiality and interactive behaviour in textile design.
