My duties working within the Features area of the picture desk include: • Supporting the Head of Features Pictures in ensuring Sub Editors and Features writers receive the service expected from the picture desk. • Working with reporters to ensure excellent visual storytelling. • Sourcing images from online resources. • Working flexibly across platforms, supplying visual content as needed. • Managing relationships with agencies and other external contacts to source or commission original, distinctive images where appropriate. • Understanding of usage rights, permissions, and copyright.
The past year of working in an exceptionally busy newsroom has taught me many things, not least of all, how crucial it is to be willing to work flexibly and adapt under constantly shifting circumstances in order to thrive. My time working at the picture desk (in particular, the Electronic Picture Desk, where computer literacy is a pre-requisite) has improved a solid working knowledge of Apple Mac, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign to an advanced level of use. My roles within the Electronic Picture Desk and Features area of the Picture Desk, work symbiotically with one another, and I split my time during the working week between the two roles in order to further enhance my knowledge of the newspaper's differing departments and positions, and their relevance to one another. My duties include: • Carrying out a first edit of incoming images sent to The Sun from agencies and staff photographers, which helps contribute to the rapid turnaround required by the 24hr news cycle. • Converting pages of the First Edition of the paper into practical formats in order to send them to the nightly news shows for #TomorrowsPapersToday, and communicating which pages are available for broadcast as instructed by the sub-editors. • Gathering video and still pictures for digital platforms. • Converting files into usable formats for internal use within CHP (Content Hub for Publishers) • Grabbing stills and screenshots from video files using multiple applications and editing them into useable formats and styles. • Organising the transmission of Royal rota images when staff photographers are scheduled in the Royal press pool. This involves ensuring the images are in a useable file format for circulation, all metadata included is accurate and up to date, and communicating with the publications expecting images from us regarding how many are being sent, and when they can expect to receive them.
• Created multimedia content for a charitable campaign focusing on infants in Romania requiring orthopaedic surgery for distribution across a variety of platforms. • Managed the campaign’s social media presence and communicated updates regarding the fund with donors across various platforms, including Twitter and Facebook.
• Researched, produced and commissioned images for Artefact magazine’s print and online editions. • Gained valuable experience into the inner workings of a busy newsroom in collaboration with final year journalism students, whilst liaising with writers and photographers to ensure multimedia stories were completed efficiently and with minimum duplication of effort. • Overseen by current and former industry professionals.
