Experiential Designer, Installation ArtistUnited Kingdom
About me
Cherrie works as an Installation artist and a Performance designer with passion in Experiential Design. Her previous works include designing and building immersive environments within the realm of Site-specific Theatre, Commercial and Pop up events, she is also capable of devising live performances in response to site context. Cherrie’s concepts are driven by her experimentation and manipulation of materials, which involves exploiting the physicality of materials to create a multi sensory experience for the audiences. ‘I believe a performance designer’s job is about finding a way to “transport” an audience to new experiences that are accessible in provoking inspiration and connection.’ - Cherrie
Projects
  • London Sinfonietta: Hidden Music 2013
London Sinfonietta: Hidden Music 2013'Hidden, The New Music Show' brings audiences to seek out a string of live solo performances in Southbank Centre's most hidden backstage spaces. Each space is transformed into an art installation that associates with a particular musical instrument. Designs of origami forms, costumes and make-up correspond to the geometrical interiors of the Queen Elizabeth Hall Lecture Centre. In ‘Hidden Music’ we explore the materiality of paper. Inspirations of installation and choreography come from the architectural structures, shapes and floor tiles. The audiences get immersed into this world of hexagons, triangles and other interesting object forms. © Cherrie Lau, Mona Wang, Baoyi Liang and Yeweon Lee
  • Humpty Dumpty Bird Nest
Humpty Dumpty Bird NestAlice’s Adventures Underground is an immersive production by Les Enfants Terribles, in association with Emma Brünjes Productions. The design process involves responding to the informal spaces of the Vaults at Waterloo, incorporate and enhance the original character of the spaces in order to communicate the narrative of Alice in the Wonderland. Cherrie's allocated installation is the Humpty Dumpty Bird nests: Humpty Dumpty is a spy who lives at the edge of the Wonderland. Jub Jub birds are under control of the Red Queen. In order to accomplish his spying activities, Humpty Dumpty builds Decoy Jub Jub Birds and Bird Nests with found objects for distraction purposes. © Cherrie Lau. Photos Credit to Lawrence Choi
  • Stormtrooper Club
Stormtrooper ClubThe Stormtrooper Club is a ‘secret’ dancing space with DJ music and Ultraviolet light. Cherrie's concept is based on the energy flow of a galactic supernova. Umbrellas are jointed together with cable ties in groups of 3-5, these small units are then accumulated to become a large, organic and seamless form. It is a free-style composition, Cherrie responds to the structure of the space and audience requirements. The entire structure is hand painted with Neon Fluorescent paints so that it glows brightly and comes to life under the Ultraviolet Light. The final outcome is a 20-metre length Ultraviolet light sculpture suspended from the ceiling, which extends from one end of a vast dancing floor to its other end. ©Cherrie Lau.
