I design things. I create meaningful experiences. I understand the importance of the narrative arc, which allows me to take my team, my clients, and my customers - our heroes - on a journey that is both rewarding and inspirational. I embrace the vagaries of cause and effect, desire and gratification. I know how to tell a good story. I cut my design teeth creating new digital products for Thompson Reuters in New York City. After jumping the pond for a masters in film theory, I was one of the lead designers of the YouView (nee Canvas) IPTV platform for the BBC and its partner broadcasters. In 2009 I joined LBi, where clients have included Virgin Atlantic, BT, and Cunard. I am currently one of the acting heads of the LBi user experience design team. In my spare time I write fiction and dabble in film production.
As the co-head of a team of 40 UX designers, I help to create and drive our department’s vision and guiding principles. I ensure quality work, increase efficiencies, pitch new business, foster mentorship, improve career development, and recruit some of the best talent around. I educate the business on the role of user experience as a professional service, and I represent LBi externally at conferences and through a growing relationship with the IPA.
I scoped, implemented, and managed online sponsorships for Morgan Stanley, Smith Barney, and JP Morgan. I crafted and chaired weekly metrics analysis workshops. I built strong relationships with clients.
As an experience design director, my primary responsibility was delivering exceptional digital experiences for Virgin Atlantic and other clients. I worked closely with stakeholders to design against key business benefits and managed a team of experience architects to ensure all aspects of the user experience were best in class. I oversaw recruitment for the LBi UX team and pitched for new business.
I helped develop CRM initiatives for Electrolux using its Art Home digital experience. I documented the user experience and interaction patterns for the Formula One iPhone application. I created and conducted presentation skills training courses for internal staff. I line managed mid- and senior-level designers.
I worked with a team of interaction and visual designers to create detailed design specifications for the Canvas IPTV platform. I gained BBC Trust approval by creating wireframes, user journeys, navigation schemas, and prototypes. I validated the user experience through research and usability testing. I ran weekly workshops with project partners, including BT, ITV, and Channel 5.
As an information architect in the BBC Mobile Technology Group, I redesigned the BBC mobile site. I created content object model documentation for a mobile-specific CMS. I designed a series of SMS interactions for Scott Mills on Radio 2 aimed at increasing audience participation. I worked closely with BBC content divisions to create and disseminate CMS guidelines and templates.
I worked closely with a team of visual designers, project managers, and technical architects to define, develop, and optimise Reuters online consumer products. I helped define the information architecture for the integration of Multex Investor and Reuters websites, culminating in a complete redesign of the Reuters online experience.
I managed the lifecycle of new products from initial cost/revenue analysis through design, development, and post-launch marketing and reporting. I aided in the streamlining of the Multex editorial team after the acquisition by Reuters.
