About me
I am a multidisciplinary artist, based in London. I experiment with materials and processes, to make curious objects/sculptures/textiles/garments which are often used as props for my performances. Through these visual and haptic atmospheres, that are often translated into video works, I embody several historical personae such as Anna O, Joan of Arc - la Pucelle, Jean Genet, and my grandmother Jeanne Durand. After being diagnosed schizophrenic, my grandmother spent most of her life in asylums, drawing day and night thousands of Virgins and multicoloured flowers with felt-tip pens. These creations Jeanne sends to my mother and myself, encouraging us to sell them to provide for ourselves. Unfolding questions about identity and articulating relations between mental health and gender, my work reflects on what is passed down between generations. I work hand in hand with 'outsider' artists. This started with the development of different processes of reproduction of my grandmother's motifs and was pursued in various projects such as Cadavre Exquis, a collaborative line of clothing developed with Giulia Libardi and a day center for adults with learning difficulties. In a recent collaboration with the poet Shakil A. l. Dawood, who self-published more than 20 books on his personal experiences of schizophrenia, I explore further the theme of the rencontre amoureuse. Along with Conor Hacon, I built Khôra, an outsider gallery/secret garden in SE London. I used the space to perform the work Contagious Hystories, which received the Christine Risley Award and is on exhibit for three months in the Constance Howard Gallery. Khôra is a temporary structure built on disused land as a remnant of our communal life in our recently demolished art studios and an immediate response to gentrification in London.
