I spent 5 years working as a software engineer designing and implementing code to control bespoke AV systems. My role was to liaise with customers to find out user needs and then develop room control systems accordingly. This involved designing touch panel UI, writing code and some User Experience Design. Typical systems would bring together multiple different hardware components, such as projectors, monitors, video codecs, video matrices and audio mixers. The challenge would be to understand the user, the context of use, the user's goals and needs for using the system, and armed with this information, creating a seamless, intuitive experience for the user from the multiple AV components. The role included: • Using a range of industry standard languages used – AMX, Crestron and Extron • Interpreting User Requirement Specifications to produce Functional Specifications and resultant code • Liaising directly with customer during the software development cycle • Graphic design of interface elements • GUI design of system interfaces consistent with current trends • Brand awareness - Incorporation of client branding within UI • UX design - particularly towards usability • Producing schematic drawings to document existing systems • Configuration of both Polycom and Cisco/Tandberg codecs • Polycom SoundStructure configuration
• Worked as a project engineer as part of an industrial placement • Design and implementation of network solutions • Installed and configured Alcatel 7710 SR Service Routers • Installed and configured Sun Fire servers • Configuration of fibre optic equipment • Taught C++ programming to A-level students as part of a scheme to encourage school leavers into engineering
