Thesis 2020: The use of Art in corporate HR strategy (Diversity
& Inclusion).
I have just completed a master’s degree in Arts Management at Maastricht University where I was awarded an 8.5 Dutch GPA (1.1 Irish equivalent) result. I specialised in audiences and new museology, focusing particularly on the topic of inclusion and diversity in institutional settings. I also received extensive training in contemporary curatorial practices. My final thesis examined how arts inclusion methodologies can complement corporate HR policies to enhance feelings of inclusion among demographically diverse individuals in the workplace from a leadership perspective. Taking examples from the Irish corporate context, this study drew parallels from D&I practices in the cultural sector with those in the business sector, examining the efficacy of three art-based initiatives (collection, commission, and participatory practice) in the inclusion of demographically diverse individuals in the workplace.
This master’s programme enabled me to work on several professional projects with leading Dutch art institutions including the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, where I had the opportunity to work with the curatorial, education and marketing teams to build a communications strategy for the museum’s night event ‘Vincent on Friday’. The strategy, part of the “Van Gogh Connects” program and commercial collaboration with the brand ‘Daily Paper’, proved to be very successful in its goal of attracting its target group of young Amsterdammers with a non-European or bi-cultural background to the museum. During my MA year, I was a member of a small team of students invited to develop a comprehensive audience evaluation model for the STRP Art and Technology Festival in Eindhoven. While studying in Maastricht, I also volunteered with the Marres House for Contemporary Culture, where I worked to engage refugee children into the local community through contemporary art and working with the senses.
