Do you really want to delete project The Mancunion (Freelance Writer and Deputy Editor)?
Having recently graduated from the University of Manchester (1st Class Hons), I am seeking employment that will both reflect my interests and skills and allow for continued professional development. I have experience in various writing practices and editorial functions and have been teaching myself editorial design practices since gaining experience in the field via student journalism. Employment in which I can exercise my proven talent for writing would be ideal, however, my versatility, creativity, and eagerness to learn would enable me to excel in various other fields. My interests aside from writing and editorial design include photography, cycling, and reading.
In this third sector role, I serve as both an extension of a national charity's communications team and the first line of inquiry for stakeholders, beneficiaries and employees of the organisation. Specifically, this entails a range of responsibilities from implementing marketing and communications strategies, predominantly focused on written and social media content creation, and network support via phone, email and social media. Throughout my time in this role, I have exercised my passion and talent for writing at every opportunity, writing numerous blog posts on behalf of the CEO and creating various branded impact reports for audiences ranging from stakeholders to government commissions and inquiry teams.
Having learned to use Adobe InDesign via my experience at The Mancunion, I developed a taste for editorial design and the process that goes into constructing the aesthetic of a publication. I therefore, along with my partner, decided to co-found Revival Magazine, a visual arts magazine not only designed to offer exposure to local artists but also offer charitable donations via the money earned from sales. My main role in the publication has been design oriented, however I have also helped in the curation of submissions for the first issue, which is due to go to print in August of 2017.
As a store assistant at The Vault, I was required to aid customers in their purchasing of rare, vintage clothing and cameras. This not only required a high standard of customer service, but excellent product knowledge as well. Here, my passion for photography and interest in fashion were key to my role, with customers often needing advice and information regarding their purchases.
As a contributor, and briefly editor, for the Opinion section of the UK's largest student newspaper, I gained valuable experience in numerous key facets of the journalism industry. Namely, I was given the opportunity to gain experience in writing to deadlines outside of the academic world, whilst also learning the way in which a small scale publication operates. Throughout my stint as deputy editor of this section, I was able to learn how both Wordpress and Adobe InDesign are utilised in this industry and learn to use both.
Studying Sociology has not only refined an existing passion for issues of equity, inequality, and other social phenomena but has been instrumental in providing me with impeccable communication skills too; proven by my achievement of a 1st class classification, multiple awards, and grades as high as 90% and 85% in written assessments and oral presentations respectively. My commitment to numerous extracurricular and personal projects throughout my degree has also enabled me to effectively manage and complete large and varied workloads to deadlines whilst ensuring that I did not compromise the high caliber of my academic work.
