Assisting with general retail duties, shelving and assisting students with reading lists during the busy ‘Freshers’ period.
In this position, I developed educational study materials for pupils studying National 5 and Higher English in schools where the English teaching provisions are strained as part of St Andrews’ Widening Access project First Chances.
At Waterstones, I thoroughly enjoyed doing work that involved being surrounded by books, and learning more about how to sell, shelve, recommend books and stationery. I learned to use cataloguing software to take customer orders and was able to apply my academic knowledge and wider love of reading to recommend books to customers.
I was responsible for setting up and packing away of class materials as well as helping pupils, aged 5-14, with their Maths and English classwork. Many of my other duties were administrative, including the recording of pupil progress and setting of homework.
I worked part-time behind the bar at the Student's Association preparing drinks, washing dishes and cleaning up the bar area.
This position primarily involved taking weekday campus tours and assisting with smooth-running of visiting days. As a senior ambassador I was trusted with additional responsibilities, such as taking V.I.P. tours during graduation week and representing the university at external recruitment events such as Higher Education Fairs. I also helped with the university’s widening access projects, meeting with people of a wide range of ages and backgrounds. My work included residential chaperoning and organisational assistance with summer schools and term-time activities, such as First Chances (P7- S6), Space School (P6) and Sutton Trust (S5). In 2017 and 2018 I led an educational session and activities on blogging and book reviewing with the P7 group, which has been well-received by both pupils and teachers.
Awarded for contributions to learning and teaching at the university for my work in the position of school president of English.
Awarded for a First class grade average for academic year.
