Recently graduated a degree in BA Illustration at University of the West of England - Bristol. I am interested in noticing the little details in the world around me and drawing people’s attention to visually pleasing ‘things’ they may not have immediately noticed. Working at The Sunday Times and ELCAF has been a crucial part of immersing myself in the ever-changing field of illustration and design. Image and the written word work hand in hand in my practice, and whether writing or illustrating - I always treat the task at hand with a forensic attention to detail. Design is at the heart of all my interests and I am keen to develop and hone my critical eye and creative skillset to become an asset in a creative team.Locked Pro Plan feature
Working on the shop floor of an independent outdoor clothing and lifestyle shop, providing customers with assistance and advice about the products. Tasks such as keeping the shop neat and tidy, interacting with customers, packing online orders, and updating the inventory have increased my organisation, and developed my interpersonal skills. I have also learnt about both the commercial and creative side of running a business.
Working as part of a team for university open days and applicant interviews. I have been trained in the code of practice when dealing with members of the public and am able to speak passionately and confidently about my course. I was praised highly by university staff when I lead an open day presentation about my course for prospective students at short notice.
I spent a week at The Sunday Times, where I worked in the design department and assisted a member of the online team by drawing icons to accompany a quiz. I was also given the unique responsibility of working to a deadline to illustrate 3 images for an article which was printed in the newspaper. This gave me an exciting insight into the creative process of publishing and reaffirmed to me my preference for working as part of a team.
Team leader of a group of volunteers at the East London Comics and Arts Festival 2015. Volunteering at ELCAF taught me to use my initiative when working under pressure and briefing the other volunteers. Tasks included setting up the festival, making creative judgements on the logistics of the space design, helping the exhibitors with their set-up, ticketing at the entrance, and providing information to the visitors.
2 week work experience which taught me universal skills for use within the retail industry. I also gained an insight into the retail end of the publishing industry; learning about embargoes, chart sales and book displays. My duties included recalling stock to the warehouse, putting books out from the deliveries and arranging the various displays. I also learnt valuable customer service skills.
