MA Design CulturesVrije Universiteit Amsterdam
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
MA Design Cultures gave me a thorough historical and critical grasp on design in its social and cultural context. This involved examining speculative (future) design as well as the development of design throughout history, forming a broad and in-depth understanding of the dynamics of digital and material design in relation to our environment and society today.
During this course I developed many valuable skills such a rigorous critical thinking and writing skills, attention to detail, presentation skills and perseverance.
As part of this course, I also took an 4-month elective at the University of Amsterdam in 'Collecting, Curating and Display', in which I was able to critically consider the practise of exhibition making and the mediation between information and public reception within the context of cultural and historical institutions.
My thesis research focussed on innovation around sustainable graphic materials: the circular repurposing of food/agricultural waste material in the production of paper.
Illustration BA (hons) Edinburgh College of Art
- Edinburgh, United Kingdom
My specialism at Edinburgh College of Art was in illustration. I learnt a breadth of visual communication skills which I have developed into a freelance practise, including traditional printmaking, compositional skills, visual story-telling and Adobe Creative Suite.
Throughout my time at Edinburgh College of Art, I held a proactive and multidisciplinary outlook to my own practise. Both outside of and alongside my studies, I pioneered several cross-disciplinary events and projects that enable others to be introduced to, celebrate, preserve and engage with design and the arts. I learnt that bridge-building between the arts and the public is a foundational value of mine.
