About me
A lead designer with 10+ years experience in companies and NGO's and has worked internationally on some of the toughest humanitarian problems including Crisis Response, Peace-building, Democracy and Human Rights. Dedicated to Open Source and Free software they are pushing for better design representation and involvement in OSS. Eriol looks to solve complex problems using humanitarian-centred design and helps organisations stay focused on the problem experienced by the people they serve. Eriol helps to build, inform and collaborate using cross-functional empathy within teams and embeds design research practice rationale in products and services. Leading design teams since 2016. Active community mentor (GSoC, Outreachy, Mozilla Community Leaders, e-life Sciences innovation and ad-hoc community mentoring) Worked in Lean, agile and remote environments where communication and collaboration is key to product success. Perceptive, organised and detailed. Great at sketching, wireframing and rapid prototyping. Can take a product through ideation to completion. Skilled at managing stakeholders, clients and communicating design needs and scoping development. A published writer, speaker at tech and design conferences both locally and internationally. Background in Visual Design, Psychology, HCI and community development. Eriol has spent more time being an 'all-rounder' in a design function but is most happy when working as part of a team of designers, developers, specialists and product folks. Eriol is passionate about D&I and actively works to make tech and design more inclusive through their talk 'Diversity in Design' (http://bit.ly/diversityindesignEF) See talk slides here: https://noti.st/eriolfox Talks playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwz4EueITgvmJzrNWbGkAMeDVLlOWQuch Publications here: https://medium.com/@EriolDoesDesign

Thesis title (as of Feb 2021): "How do human centred design contributions impact Humanitarian Open Source Software?" A critical exploration in how human centred designers participate in and improve humanitarian Open Source Software. Research Summary: This research will critically explore how collaboration between human centred designers, people who manage Humanitarian Open Source Software (HOSS) and users of that software work towards improving the user-centred design of the HOSS. Through community-based participatory workshops and qualitative research, this project will work in affected, humanitarian locations where HOSS is most prevalent, for example India with ‘dying’ language translation, Australia with supply-chain traceability and with human rights journalists in developing countries with encrypted information sharing. This research will discover insights on the impact that design contributions have on HOSS and also the front-line users of HOSS tools.
