- Material of the Year: Q&A with Charlotte Kidger‘I feel the initial interest and urge to work with waste plastic is driven by the instinctive need to find alternative ways of using waste in general – answering the demands of finding new and alternative raw materials instead of harvesting what we already have at our fingertips.’ These are the words of designer Charlotte Kidger, whose debut furniture collection combines waste polyurethane foam dust from CNC milling with bright pigments and a resin to bind and make textural, colourful forms. - AssemblyAssembly For the second year of its Guest Country initiative (following the This is India show in 2016), London Design Fair presents a coast-to-coast overview of contemporary American design today, with a special exhibition showcasing the work of 13 emerging and established US talents. Curated by Jill Singer and Monica Khemsurov, founders of Stateside web magazine Sight Unseen and the brains behind the roving Site Unseen OFFSITE design fairs, the Assembly pavilion presents a hand-picked selection of independent studios and rare, luxury and innovative objects spanning numerous design disciplines. With no other exhibition during London Design Festival offering such a wide-ranging spectrum of American design, Assembly provides a unique opportunity to uncover the breadth of US design talent, and catch a glimpse of the concepts, materials and thinking currently shaping the country’s contemporary creative scene.
