About me
The objects I create focus on clean, crisp lines consisting of multiple components. Forged features show how the metal moves, but in a controlled and formal way, in keeping with the other lines. I utilise the strength of the material, keeping mass where it’s needed and reducing the section where strength is not as vital. This forms a certain elegance due to the contrast between the larger parent steel size and the smaller, forged down, size. My work is heavily inspired by traditional Japanese architecture. Specifically, the way that the buildings are constructed using various interlocking wooden joints, which then becomes a decorative feature in itself. I am also influenced by modern architecture, the straight lines and angular shapes which the buildings form, with large expanses of concrete or steel. In the construction of my work I use either or hot or cold fixing methods which are not only practical, but that also form a visual feature for people to see. I commonly use wedges as they are a strong joint which allows dissimilar material to be joined. Rivets and Tenons are also used alongside punched holes which show the movement of hot steel as well as providing a secure joint which cannot be undone. I frequently use Mild Steel as well as Silicon Bronze and Stainless Steel in my work. I find that these materials complement each other well, the Bronze and Stainless highlights certain features, as well as softening the visually heavy and hard steel.
Projects
  • Wedged Surface
Wedged SurfaceThis piece is my response to having furniture with forged features which can also be flat packed. The silicon bronze wedges can be removed to allow the top to be lifted off. The bars can then be slid out from below and it can all be packed. Due to the dimensions (1200x300x450mm) the piece is multi functional. Due to the 10mm plate on the top two people can sit on it comfortably as well as there being a flat surface for objects to be placed upon.
  • Console Table
Console TableThis console table was an opportunity for me to explore more fixing techniques, particularly tenons. This allowed me to make a very slim table with straight, angular lines, which was also stable and functional.
  • Shelf no.1
Shelf no.1This shelf was created by using the same techniques I use in my vessels. Every feature on the shelf provides a function int eh construction. I wanted to create a shelf which had a very thin but strong surface, hence using a piece of 8mm steel plate. The shelf can be completely disassembled by removing the wedges and is made up from 9 pieces.
