About me

In 2013 I launched a self-publishing venture to write, design, print, publish book, and art directing exciting collaborative projects based around these books, which would amplify the work and advertise it across media and publications beyond conventional literary territory. I have always been keen to connect literature to popular culture, believing it has much more exciting energy and creativity than literature background which are usually reserved for high-art collaborations in classic music and opera. I also wanted to bring high literature (not spoken word poetry, but poetry that has its roots in traditional poetry) and literary fiction in to a commercial and popular culture. I began to design and handmake my own books. I distributed these amongst the community, I managed to get the books in an award-winning bookshop, I arranged live readings where I could sell them at performances, and I created a website where I sold them online. I later wanted to reimagine live performances and contacted an installation artist to create a live stage for live works with a fragmented video project that would disturb and manipulate space in a live environment. And as I have creative skills in music, I wrote music to accompany my live performances I brought onboard some major talent and have created some fantastic work perhaps only hindered by budget affording larger more visionary collaborations. I’ve worked with visual artists, installation art, classical music composer on several occasions, an electronic music producer, a choreographer, as well as writing for large companies like the English National Ballet and Prada. My work has been featured by the Guardian, Dazed Digital, Boys By Girls Magazine, It's Nice That. https://uk.linkedin.com/in/jamesroyblairanderson

JRBA

May 2013
  • Capability of writing successful press releases resulting in features in high-profile newspapers and magazines Delivered successful social media campaigns, increasing traffic to websites, awareness of book releases and upcoming events Efficiently collected email addresses accumulated from events to add to mailing list subscribers for monthly newsletters Organised trade fairs resulting in selling out of all copies of one of three publications on offer and many of others on sale. These positive sales were reflected in achieving highest sales in the room Confidently negotiated with bookseller for percentage agreement, after successfully having handmade designed book in their award-winning bookshop due to attention to detail and high quality of design. And producing invoices for booksellers Successfully used practical creative skills in graphic design to design covers, social media artwork, and designing websites Resourcefulness by learning new skills that would utilise my resources at hand. Examples would be taking the initiative to learn how to design, print, and handproduce books after being unable to secure a practical budget for printer services or to hire professional binders Organised live events and took complete responsibility which not only involved researching and booking high-profile art venues, but also liaising closely with installation artists to help with stage design and working with the technical team. Following this I used social media to market the events to the wider general public. Arranged meetings with senior staff writers, editor-in-chiefs, and with production teams for press and potential future features Art directed visual mood boards for collaborations to articulate and develop a project’s vision Expanded and built a network of industry professionals within publishing and across the creative industries Researched target audience, stockists, distributors, key audience communication platforms, and buying methods, key peers of the niche market Utilising online social media to grow sales and awareness, including curating social media content to reflect the brand of publishing. This included images, both short and long copy, and video. Utilised an array of ways to market including collaboration, events, image, and digital technology Attending publishing conferences to network and to further understand the industry Created all visual art including branding logo, website design, promotional material across social media, publishing material (including cover designs, typography, page layouts and book design).
