About me

Hello! My name is James, I'm the Marketing and Sponsorship Coordinator at the University of Sussex Students' Union. My duties generally involve overseeing the media sales and marketing provisions within the Students' Union, as well as assisting with the delivery of our year-round events calendar. I'm also responsible for the recruitment and management of a team of events and promotions staff. I have around four years of experience in the music and events industry, largely from a background in live music. I've been gigging semi-regularly for around four years, generally around the South Coast but touring a couple of times around the UK. This has ranged from small pubs and clubs, to local festivals, to restaurants, and has gained me invaluable experience of working with a variety of different venues. My job and my hobbies have allowed me to coordinate a number of events, from 100-capacity gig nights to 3000-capacity Freshers Week events. I spent four years working in hospitality alongside my studies, including fine dining, large-scale catering events, bar work at major festivals, and working a variety of cocktail bars and cafes. This means I'm driven exclusively by customer satisfaction - I'm quick to adapt and work to ensure the customer is always happy. I'm a recent Psychology graduate from the University of Sussex. I'm fascinated by what makes people tick, and my degree has given me the essential skills needed to critically analyse a situation, handle data effectively, and work with people in a manner that is sympathetic to their needs. I'm confident in data collection, client and peer relations, event management, sales and marketing, including being adept at social media as a marketing tool. I'm looking for new opportunities to develop my skills within the field of music and events

Higher Education Officer Award: Most Creativity

  • Elected as the Higher Education Officer for badminton at the University of Sussex. This was a voluntary role within Badminton England, the National Governing Body for the sport. I won the award for "Most Creativity" by implementing a unique calendar of events and implementing new ideas within the University sport system, to increase active participation in badminton. This included a variety of social sessions, beginners' coaching, UV tournaments and a semi-competitive league system.
