  • Music in Leeds Vol I-III
Music in Leeds Vol I-IIIMade in partnership with the BBC, The City Talking: Music in Leeds, Vol.I-III, applies the storytelling sensibilities of The City Talking newspaper to a thirty-five year period when music made Leeds a city where you didn’t want to miss a note, a beat, a synth stab or a chord. Each film in the series featured a physical timeline, based around the wall of a well known gig venue in Leeds – The Cockpit, The Brudenell and The Warehouse – posters of relevant bands from across the years pasted up to il
  • The City Talking
The City TalkingFor the last two years i've been designing the layout for The City Talking, a free cultural newspaper and magazine that highlights the voices of people and cities around the country. As well as it being refreshing to see and read something as high quality pushing forward in a domain seen as in decline, it's a great product to work on due to the felxibility and experimentation i'm afforded in its design. Aside from a grid and font choices, there are few rules to follow in its design, allowing me
  • Fashion in Leeds
Fashion in LeedsThe City Talking: Fashion in Leeds, Vol. 1 is a film that tells stories from Leeds’ clothing industry, style and social fabric. I created a colour palette to use throughout the project, alongside animated maps that draw tile data from Google Maps, animated illustrations of buildings integral to the story and heavily graded VFX treament of urban footage. I also created an animated silk fabric for a teaser campaign and designed a special 100-page magazine too.
  • Tech in Leeds
Tech in LeedsThe City Talking: Tech in Leeds is a film about tech innovators, past and present, who have made an impact on the city and the world. My primary role was as animator on this project, working with particle systems and video compositing. The film takes heavy stylistic cues from Everybod's Gone to the Rapture, a video game that features towards the end of the documentary that features golden particles and 'ghosts' throughout. Each section begins with narration while a camera pans across a physical
  • Star Wars
Star WarsFor the launch of Star Wars VII The Force Awakens, The City Talking did a special edition of its Leeds newspaper, featuring a series of commissioned illustrations by local artists. As The CIty Talking's designer, I worked with their photographer Shang-Ting Peng to create a Leeds cityscape populated by iconic Star Wars imagery. I also got to submit my own illustration, creating a Darth Vader Starfield under my moniker The Curious Machine.
  • Tech in the North
Tech in the NorthTech in the North is the latest in a series of films produced by The City Talking; a collection of short stories about some of the companies and people shaping the tech industry in the UK and around the world. As The City Talking's designer, I shaped the promotional campaign through a variety of print and digital assets, creating a series of images to reflect the cities explored in the film (Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle) – abstract shapes built from photographs of iconic
