About me
Joana Carvalho is a Portuguese illustrator based in London with an interest in children’s book publishing and editorial illustration. She is adaptive in her approach and open to engage with both traditional and digital processes. What she enjoys most in her illustration practice is the ability to create new worlds in which her imagination can be left to roam and explore. She is looking forward to the challenge of establishing her freelance practice in the coming months. Joana has participated in competitions such as The Macmillan Prize (2019) and the Carmelite Prize (2020).
Projects

FadoI created a series of three Posters about Fado, with the intention to share a glimpse of what Fado is. I wanted to share its beauty and importance in Portuguese culture.
  • The First Of
The First OfThe First Of is a concertina book depicting the life of the first King of Portugal. The six illustrations are representing key moments in his life; His birth, first battle, marriage, big injury, coronation and legacy.
  • Happy the Grumpy Bunny
Happy the Grumpy BunnyA children's book depicting the friendship of a girl and a very grumpy bunny. The book starts as a grey scale illustration and progressively changes in to colour, the idea behind it was to show the happiness of the little girl (main character) increasing as the bunny became her friend and companion. This story was inspired by my own, as a child without many friends, I became very attached to my bunny Oscar.
