  • La Goutte D'Or
La Goutte D'OrLa Goutte d'Or - located in district 18th of Paris metropolitan area - is home to a large population of migrants from african and arab origin. In this neighborhood, countries that were once european colonies have their customs and cultures represented by their own people, in one of the most multicultural environments in the French capital.
  • Iraqi's Ghost Embassy
Iraqi's Ghost EmbassyThe regime of Saddam Hussein had good relations with the GDR on the Eastern side of the wall. In 1969, Iraq was the first non-socialist republic to recognize the new German state. Erich Honecker, the Eastern German leader, was even guest of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad to discuss warfare agreements as cooperation between the two countries also included support for the development of chemical and biological weapons, as reported by the German journal Der Spiegel in 1990. This good diplomatic relationship didn't persist after the fall of the wall. After suspicions of arms trafficking inside the embassy, the government of the newly unified Germany demanded the departure of staff in 1991, just before the end of the Gulf War, forcing employees to leave the building as quickly as possible. After that, the compound fell into a legal limbo. Technically, the 5.000 m² building belongs to the German Government, but the Republic of Iraq has the right to "perpetual use" of the premise (a right that embassies and official representations usually own), thus preventing the authorities from the European country to put the building down or renovate it. While the situation is not solved, the building remains abandoned. Regimes might fall, countries might reunite but in this place, chairs, shelves, telephones and typewriters remain as witnesses of the inexorable passage of time, while the concrete gradually dwindles.
  • Ngotas Upendo
Ngotas UpendoNgota's Upendo (Swahili for Ngota's Love) Primary School is a small school located in the heart of Mathare Slum, Kenya's second biggest slum in the capital Nairobi. It's estimated that 500.000 people live there. Access to basic services like water, electricity and sanitation is very limited. The school, created by bishop Ngota, an influent figure from east Kenya who decided to help kids in the slums, has been transformed in a kind of safe-haven for a whole community inside Mathare. There, all the 110 kids from age 2 to 16, are provided with basic education, materials, food and basic health assistance. The idea was to create a safe environment for the kids to learn as much as possible, so they can maybe change their fates in a direction out of the slums. The high levels of corruption, a sad colonial history and a violent tribal sectarianism are some of the ingredients of this primordial soup that portions of African societies are exposed. In these pockets of poverty, life goes on at very low standard whereas many lives are ruined without nobody noticing it.
