Joshua Hughes From my first glimpse of a Rebel Blockade Runner pursued by Vader’s Imperial Star Destroyer I knew I wanted a future in film. The ability of the moving image to awe spectators but also to emotionally move them and perhaps change their opinion is something I want to develop. My course has given me the opportunity to refine my skills by working on my own short films and also as an assistant cameraman on others. These experiences helped me cope with the frustration of retakes and out of focus shots, but also enjoy the satisfaction of seeing an initial idea to develop into a finished film on the big screen. Furthermore, I have refined my editing skills by watching many tutorials on sound mixing and colour grading in editing software such as Final Cut Pro X. At the beginning of last year, I participated in a three-month work experience placement at Twickenham Studios. During my placement, I assisted the post-production sound mixers and foley artists. Being able to follow professionals through their daily work gave me a unique insight into the long hours and dedication needed for a career in the industry. I have worked in retail at Blue Inc where I strongly believe I have strengthened my communication and organisation skills, especially when working in a crowded and busy environment, and reporting to the store manager every day. The skills I have learned during my time in retail make me a reliable candidate for the role of Site Assistant at your studios as I am always up to get my hands dirty and completing a task with ambition and enthusiasm. I have recently completed my A-Levels at Orleans Park Sixth Form and am currently on a gap year before going to university next September to study film production. I have a burning passion to enter the film industry and working as Site Assistant at your studios will, I believe, give me the confidence and experience to go further into the areas of the industry I would like to go into.

Recently, in July, I won the BFI Media Magazine award for Best Short Film. My film was shortlisted from thousands of applicants down to only 30 on the day. The judges commented that I my skills in all areas of film production from directing to cinematography were exceptional and was even described as being ‘the next Christopher Nolan’ after using an elaborate structure for the basis of my narrative. https://www.englishandmedia.co.uk/competitions/mediamagazine-production-competition-2019-the-winners/
