What gets me up in the morning is solving design problems—designing the solution that perfectly communicates an idea or that enables my users to achieve their goals. By trade I’m a graphic designer. I started out studying usability, continued into communication and to tie the two together I graduated as a graphic designer. This combined background has heavily influenced my view that graphic design is not about making pretty pictures. It is about creating solutions that serve a clear purpose, communicating ideas and taking into account where the final design will be used, by whom and why. I have 11 years experience of designing and producing communications from concept through to final product delivery. In this time I designed and delivered final products such as: campaign-related communication packages including printed posters and leaflets, EDM, websites etc; corporate branding and a complete intranet re-design (covering both information structure and graphical elements). Extensive experience working with multi-cultural teams and audiences. Working knowledge of the Adobe suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Dreamweaver). The program combined computer science and work science to put the development of IT tools in the context of their actual use by people in a working environment. This was a pioneering program that introduced usability to the software development process and included topics such as human computer interaction, user-centred design, cognitive psychology and computer supported cooperative work.
