Hi I'm Layla - Currently about to graduate (July 2019) at Nottingham Trent University with a BA(Hons) Graphic Design degree. I am a designer and maker, I like to get stuck into briefs through craft and experimentation, adopting a hands on approach to visual communication before reaching a more refined resolution. - Architectural TypeAARHUS: The Brief: Design a bespoke typeface based on an iconic piece of architecture or architect. Solution: A contemporary display typeface designed by focusing on the Isbjerget building in Aarhus, Denmark, also known as The Iceberg. Concentrating on the physical appearance and structure of the building, a visual toolkit was created consisting of simplified shapes identified in the Isbjerget. Each letter-form was crafted using each of these shapes, ensuring a consistent approach.
- Conspiracy TheoriesThe Brief: Delve into the depths of the unknown and present your findings to the world. Framing the narrative is key. Concept: Initial research was based around mythical creatures and monsters. Looking at the environments they could be based in and theories surrounding their existence. Solution: An illustrated children’s book featuring various different monsters based on my initial findings.
- Great ExplorersThe Brief: Research previous explorers/expeditions and create a piece of design that captures the content in a new and exciting way. Solution: I chose to focus on entomologist and traveller Evelyn Cheesman. Exploring the hands on approach she adopted through my own work, using origami to craft insects and plants to bring her achievements to life. An editorial was produced celebrating the role she played within the Natural History Museum, featuring sketches, diary entries and photography to give
