About me
My name is Leah McDowell and I'm a print designer and art director based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I love telling stories, but I’ve never been much of a wordsmith. It's my job, however, to communicate stories of all sorts; be it a work of fiction born of an author’s imagination, or the history and values of a hard-earned business. Lucky for me, there’s that saying about how pictures speak a thousand words. My experience in design and art direction in book and magazine publishing has granted me skills in print design, illustration, branding, typesetting, production and art direction. Let me help you to tell your story to the people who matter. I'm always excited to talk about new projects, so drop me a line if you are too.
Projects
  • Mixed-Up Summer Cover Design
Mixed-Up Summer Cover DesignBook cover illustration for 'The Mixed-Up Summer of Lily McLean', a children's book written by Lindsay Littleson aimed at 11-12 year old girls.
  • Secret of the Kelpie
Secret of the KelpieAs an Art Director in children's publishing, it's my responsibility to find the right illustrator that will make a story whole. I commission, brief and guide excellent illustrators to create brilliant picture books, as well as designing the look and feel of the final print package. For this project I worked with the talented Scottish illustrator, Philip Longson in reaction to the work of Lari Don, the Scottish author and storyteller.
  • SYP Scotland Conference Branding
SYP Scotland Conference BrandingThe Society of Young Publishers Scotland held their first ever conference, '2020: A Publishing Odyssey' in Edinburgh in March 2016 and they needed their branding to really make a statement. Their conference materials had to reflect the energetic, dynamic and forward-thinking feel of the day, enticing their young delegates and getting conversations started. The resulting design was applied across programmes, signage, stationary, name badges and social media platforms.
