- Il Gorgo della SposaTrecenta is a small village of less than three thousand inhabitants in the Venetian area, Italy. It rises among seven gorghi. A gorgo is a small lake with irregular shape and natural origins, typical of the area called Polesine di Rovigo. At the beginning of the past century, here was born a girl whose beauty was so unique that the Count of the village asked her hand in marriage. Being very poor, her family accepted the proposal, despite her desires and the huge difference of age between the two of them. Deeply in love with a poor young boy of the village, the girl preferred to throw herself in a gorgo on her wedding day, to avoid marrying him. From that moment, that gorgo was called Gorgo della Sposa - Gorgo of the Bride - in her memory. Few things of those years are left: the historical archive of the village was almost entirely destroyed in 1951 by the flood of the Po, the river that flows close to the village. Water seems to be something sadly recurring in this story. According to the oral tradition, during the cold days of winter it is possible, for some people, to see the veil of the bride floating on the surface of water. For others, it is just the fog, being the whole area well known for its thick fog during the winter season.
