About me
I have always been a creative person and had an interest in the Arts. When I left school I started working at a local business directory called The Works Local Ltd (based in Reepham, Lincoln). After completing an apprenticeship at the company I was asked which area of the business I wanted to develop in, and of course I said design! I received training from their production manager in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator and started designing some of the smaller adverts for the directory. As time went on I became the full time graphic designer and soon took on the additional role of office manager. Unfortunately the business was taken over by the printers and all the staff were made redundant. This experience gave me the direction and motivation to develop my career in design. Since then I have interned at a local charity, Off The Bench, who were just starting to put together a design team. I helped the team develop a client base, based on the rapport I had built with local business whilst at The Works, and designed new logos and adverts for them. I order to further develop my career I decided I needed to develop my design skills by completing some higher education. I am currently undertaking a part time BA in Design and Innovation with the Open University and I am in the process of completing my third year (first level 2 module) called 'Design Essentials'. I have been encouraged by my tutor to start a portfolio of work in order to help develop my career and promote myself to the design community. My tutor has also encouraged me to pursue my desired career path, believing I have the skills and flair to achieve my goals in this highly competitive industry, and has encouraged me under a MA in Advertising or Graphic Design once I have finished my degree. My career goal is to work in advertising and one day coordinate and manage my own design team. My dream would be to work as an Art Director in television or film, as I find television and film a source of escapism and therefore would love to be part of creating these worlds for others. I am currently starting to self educate on millinery so I can start up my own side business designing and making hats, specialising in Steampunk, Victorian, Cosplay and Vintage designs.

Arts Pathway: This general design degree focuses on developing creative design thinking and practical work to address problems in every aspect of life, not just the creative industries. The core design modules feature online design studios, social networking and inspiring study materials alongside the significant practical component. As well as design, you’ll study a complementary second subject gaining skills and knowledge in an area that suits your needs and interests. Key features of the course Teaches you about several different design specialisms Focuses on the process and application of design and innovation in real-world contexts Puts your learning into practice, building a portfolio of design work to show your ideas and skills Accreditation available from the Institution of Engineering Designers for the BSc Your first design module introduces the basics of the design process and creative thinking. You’ll sketch and model prototypes and present your portfolio of work in an online design studio, and investigate issues such as: design and the individual, design and society, and the global impact of design. You’ll then study your chosen second subject. Your study of design will help you develop the skills and tools needed to research people’s needs, develop design concepts and turn concepts into well-specified products. You’ll continue to develop your modelling and drawing skills, including orthographic and perspective drawing, as well as learn about user research, creativity techniques and the use of materials in design. You also further your understanding and knowledge of your second subject. As you deepen your understanding of design, you’ll examine how new ideas, designs and inventions are translated into product, service and system innovations and how they can help ensure a social, economically and environmentally sustainable future. A final assessed project brings together everything you’ve learned. In your second subject, you’ll build and consolidate your knowledge and skills, graduating with a strong, practical and analytical understanding of the relationship between the two disciplines.
