- Evolution of Rhythmic Gymnastics LeotardsFor my BA thesis, I looked at the evolution of rhythmic gymnastics leotards from the sports inclusion in the Olympics in 1984 until 2013. The development of these designs was analyzed using the criteria of expressiveness, aesthetics and functionality, and how outside factors such as technological developments, mainstream fashion or fashion in other sports, and internal factors such as regulations, affect the changes that occurred in 30 years. Along with this research, I illustrated a leotard for every year that I analyzed, selecting a garment that either best reflected the style at the time, or pushed the boundaries and changed the way people were designing leotards. These illustrations were then put into a poster, as well as a book. The book was 8 inches squared, and was folded into an accordion book, which could then open out to 160 inches displaying the evolution in a complete timeline.
- Experimental CalligraphyCalligraphy is a very standardized practice, with the aim to create consistant letterforms, which is the base for most typeface design. I wanted to break free from these restraints and use unconventional tools to create new, expressive calligraphy, which could be then brought into a digital space. I wanted to make this accessable to others to both learn from my experiments, but also give them an opportunity to experiment themselves and discover new and interesting ways to create letterforms.
- CalligraphyCalligraphy is an art form that I have a great passion for. I work with brush pens, fine liners, pointed nibs, broad-tip nibs, folded pens, and other objects to create many different styles of calligraphy. This is a skill that improves with practice, and I have filled out many notebooks practicing creating letterforms, constructing sentences, or perfecting the movement and pressure required to write properly. I use these calligraphy skills for clients such as wedding couples, and selling other work, such as handmade cards online.
- Crafting Type WorkshopIn April 2015, I took at 3-day typeface design workshop in Boston with Crafting Type. During this workshop, we started on the first day creating sketches and developed those sketches through consultations and critiques. For the following two days, we worked on our designs on the computer while alternating lectures, critiques and work time. During the course of the workshop, I began developing a font inspired by Japanese brush pens to create a fun sans serif that is legible in both large and small sizes making its usage very flexible. The workshop allowed me to develop my type design skills, specifically in terms of software, while being taught and guided by industry experts.
- Woodland TypefaceFor the typeface design project, I set out to design an expressive, display font that could be used for logos, headers, and signs. I began by creating a series of calligraphy experiments using different, unconventional tools such as broken wood, forks, feathers, and handmade pens, bringing unexpected and original results. I then selected one of the experiments to develop further into a digital typeface. The final font has rustic and expressive letterforms that would be suitable for outdoor adventure companies, travel ad campaigns or your local hipster coffee shop sign.
- Barbican TypefaceBarbican is a modular display typeface created using the geometric shapes of the Barbican’s brutalist architecture. The design process began with an architectural tour of the Barbican Estate, and with the collection of photos documenting different shapes, textures, colours and patterns seen at the Barbican. From there, I created a scaffolding for the typeface that mimicked the architecture and used this as a guide to design the upper and lower cases, as well as the numerals. This typeface could be used for special events, advertisements, and internal documents for the Barbican.
