About me
Artist’s Statement
I am an audiovisual composer, artist and sound designer based in Birmingham, UK.
I am interested in creating immersive audiovisual experiences that reveal and amplify hidden connections between every-day technology and our environment. My current work surveys the physical locations of ‘The Cloud’; capturing the unique acoustic footprint of the internet. It aims to highlight the fact that whilst our smartphones sit silently on our dresser tables as we sleep, somewhere in the world a physical hive of noise, cables and chaos maintains our ‘digital selves’, with real analogue consequences to the surrounding environment.
For soundscape artist R. Murray Shafer, “if ecology is the study of the relationship between living organisms and their environment, acoustic ecology is the study of sounds in relationship to life and society.” My research studies the acoustic ecology of the data driven society by investigating ways in which sound and space influence both our individual and collective experiences.
In 2014 I won the Deutsche Bank Creative Prize in Music for my work investigating the acoustic ecology of Data Centres and the impact of the cloud computing revolution. To find out more about this ongoing project please visit The People’s Cloud.
Professional Work
I am available as a sound recordist, composer, producer and engineer for broadcast and media projects. I have worked for a variety of clients on commercial assignments including Factory Fifteen, Johnson and Johnson (Sudafed), Santander, McLaren Group, Blackberry, Factory Fifteen, The Science Museum London, The V&A, The National Museum of Computing and more.
I previously played in the electronic band Nedry as engineer, producer, composer and performer for the group. We released two full-length albums with Monotreme Records which received global critical acclaim. I have also produced a number of remixes for other artists under this moniker. The band has toured regularly, having played across the UK, Europe, Japan and the US including major festivals such as Sonar (ES), Roskilde (DK), Latitude (UK), Airwaves (IS) and SXSW (US).
Projects
- JagodnaJagodna was once a heavily populated that stimulated the economic area of Upper Silesia for many decades with a rich industry of forestry and mining. Since the collapse of the ozone and inverted effects of ‘global warming’, the place has become desolated, permanently frozen with little sign of life other than the trails from tyre tracks heading away from the bitter, frozen conditions that made it unbearable work under. Many of the workers have now fled to areas in the former Soviet Union such as Siberia, where the forest industry still pervades and the temperatures are a little more tolerable. All that remains are the turrets,fences and a crazed dog. Tracks are frozen into the ground; it’s too cold to snow here, so the ground is almost preserved perfectly. The wind is bitter and ferocious though, cutting through even the most ‘high tech’ of extreme cold protective apparel. And the sound of the wind… it’s like nothing you’ve experieced, piercing through the trees like a demonic aeolian harp, convolving with the undulations of the terrain, piercing through your sensory perception. Yet every human dreams of returning to Earth one day. Earth has become Heaven. The course of mankind has been set towards colonizing the universe. The Pax Humana is in full effect. Giant corporations overseen by The Powers control every human necessity from birth until death, those that fail to adhere to the system are summarily executed. Genesis is the new beginning. Xavier Miro is a 17 year old space rigger, graffiti artist and dissident. A series of dreams leads him on an adventure where he will meet Moon Dudes, Shamanic Space Pirates, Galactic Ravers, Zugbots and the sinister Shadows. And where he will not only find out the answers to why mankind was expelled from Earth but why he is the only person that can save her. Humanities future looks doomed if it remains on this planet. Xavier Of The World is a morality tale that looks into a dystopian future, where vast corporations with a disregard for nature and the ecology of planet Earth has led to mankind’s expulsion. Where humanity has become a commodity to be exported around the universe. Xavier Miro is a new hero embarking on a journey to find the truth about humanity and his own place in the universe.
