About me
Maxwell Rushton Born 1989 Works in London Working primarily in performance, painting, drawing and sculpture Maxwell explores cultural phenomena and his own human condition. In his work Brand New Me, Maxwell explores society’s growing relationship with marketing by painting 20 pints of his own blood into an epic-scale replica of his logo, turning twice the volume of blood he has in his body into a piece of advertising. From this to his project Drawn Out, in which he filled four 10 meter rolls of paper with approximately 10 million hand-drawn lines over the duration of a year whilst he lived in isolation, to viral footage of Maxwell’s sculpture Left Out, which has so far been viewed over 40 million times, his “thought-provoking works” (Huffington Post) are “causing a stir throughout the international art scene” (Lodown Magazine).

  • Drawn Out
Drawn OutFour 10 meter rolls of paper Each filled with 4 repeated hand-drawn lines 10 million lines in total Drawn Out, 2013 – 2015 Dimensions: 1,000cm x 250cm Materials: Pen on four rolls of paper This drawing consists of four 10m x 0.5m rolls of paper, on which Maxwell has repeatedly inscribed the same motif of marks that have found their way into his art since his earliest drawings. The work is compiled of approximately ten million hand drawn marks. Maxwell chose to use this same method of mark making he started as an infant as they represent the artistic spontaneity of a child, an expression still devoid of any of the artistic influences of his adulthood. The decision to move into isolation for a year to transfer these marks onto paper is the modus operandi Maxwell used to detach himself from the beaten track of catalogued art, to fully explore his own primitive artistic expression. Popular culture becomes part of the fabric of who we are, as primitive children we grow into processed adults, partly defining ourselves through the culture that surround us. By living alone and by marking the paper in the same way he had when he was a child, Maxwell resorts back to a method of drawing without influence, through a process without distraction. Because of the level of detail, from a distance the four large rolls of paper appear as single lines on the wall, causing the overall piece to take on a fractal pattern as the four rolls resemble the individual set of four lines that fill them. http://maxwellrushton.com/projects/drawn-out/
  • Brand New Me
Brand New Me5 years of blood letting 20 pints of the artist’s blood 1 logo Brand New Me, 2011 – 2016 Dimensions: 330cm x 200cm Materials: 20 pints of the artist’s blood on canvas. Artist’s shocking act to turn himself into a logo by using 20 pints of his own blood over 6 years – twice volume of blood in the average human body. Since 2011, Rushton has been preparing a work entitled Brand New Me in which he will turn his body into brand. This is the artist’s most ambitious project to date. The canvas depicts a monumentally sized logo made entirely of the artist’s blood. Using blood for its connotations of worship, the work can be seen as a sacrifice of biological matter to transcend into the the metaphysical helm of the brand. The logo itself originates from a simple set of marks which he’s been drawing since he was a child. Adapting such innocent marks into a logo is an act of commodifying his most primal expression. http://maxwellrushton.com/projects/buy-in-bleed-out/
